Recently, Airia was contacted by a local manufacturing company in Fareham as they had for some time been experiencing a high number of compressed air related shutdowns on their production equipment.
Through extensive flow and pressure monitoring combined with daily online meetings, it was identified that compressor control and ring main flow were the cause of the air-related shutdowns.
Two separate plant rooms composed of 3 x 90kw compressors each were “fighting each other” as they were trying to supply compressed air to 2 separate sections of the ring main over 75 metres apart from each other.
The ring main unit was made up of a small section of 110mm Infinity air pipework and the rest being 75mm plastic pipework with many plastic butterfly valves at interjoining sections. Although these butterfly valves were marked as 75mm od, the internal diameter was in fact only 40mm!
These “pinch points” were creating a substantial restriction with up to 1000 cfm of compressed air trying to flow through it!
Airia have supplied and installed over 100 metres of 110mm Teseo compressed air pipework during a planned shutdown, linking the two plant rooms together to resolve the control issue and replacing the section of restrictive 75mm plastic pipework and butterfly valves to improve the flow.
The customer now reports that their production yields have dramatically improved since installation and are now looking to replace the rest of the 75mm plastic pipework.
